The game offers a wide range of factions and classes, each possessing their own distinct abilities and weapons. It takes place in a near-future rendition of the United States, where players partake in fast-paced, team-based multiplayer matches across various maps and game modes.

The game's setting revolves around factions known as "Defiant," Wolves (from Ghost Recon), Echelon (from Splinter Cell), and the Outcasts and Cleaners (from The Division). Additional factions from Far Cry and Watch Dogs (DedSec) are also planned. Players have the ability to customize their Defiant characters with unique traits, abilities, devices, weapons, and items. The game includes 6-versus-6 linear game modes, such as "Domination" and "Escort," and incorporates punk visual art elements.

The development of the game was officially announced by Ubisoft in July 2021. A closed Insider test of a pre-alpha version of XDefiant took place in North America in 2021, followed by a second Insider test in February 2023. A closed beta test occurred from April 13 to April 23. In March 2022, the game was rebranded as part of the Ubisoft Originals brand, omitting the Tom Clancy's universe title, and is anticipated to feature characters from other Ubisoft franchises.

Shortly after the launch of the game's closed beta on April 17, 2023, XDefiant became one of the top-streamed games on the Twitch streaming platform, garnering approximately 50,000 viewers and surpassing the combined popularity of Warzone 2.0 and Modern Warfare II.

During Ubisoft Connect on June 12, 2023, an open session was announced, starting on June 20 for closed beta test participants (June 21 for all players) and concluding on June 23.
