Overwatch 2, developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment in 2022, follows its predecessor, the hero shooter Overwatch from 2016. Initially planning both player-versus-player (PvP) and cooperative modes, the focus shifted to emphasize PvP elements, reducing team sizes from six to five. It launched on various platforms and featured full cross-platform play.

In Overwatch 2, players select heroes from a roster of 35 characters categorized into damage, support, and tank classes. The game centers on PvP combat across multiple modes and maps, catering to casual and competitive matches.

Changes from the original game include reducing the number of tank slots, aiming to speed up gameplay and simplify player focus. Maps were redesigned for better cover, and hero roles were adjusted. A new PvP mode called "Push" was introduced, replacing the Assault mode in the Overwatch League map rotation.

Overwatch 2 shifted from a premium model to a free-to-play setup, adopting a battle pass system for rewards and discontinuing loot boxes. The game allows cross-progression across platforms but maintains separate competitive skill ratings between console and PC versions.

Story-based PvE missions were added in Season 6, advancing Overwatch's lore and offering Hero Mastery missions to help players improve their skills with specific characters. These missions are available during specific seasons or can be accessed permanently through purchase.
