**Black Myth: Wukong** is an action role-playing game, often compared to soulslike games, although Game Science, the developer, does not categorize it as such. Inspired by the classic Chinese novel **Journey to the West**, the player controls a monkey character referred to as the Destined One, based on Sun Wukong. The primary weapon is the Ruyi Jingu Bang staff, which can extend and shrink.
Combat involves various attack stances, enabling different strike patterns of light and heavy attacks. Light attacks accumulate Focus Points, while heavy attacks consume them. Stamina is used for sprinting, dodging, and attacking. The game features various spells, including transformation spells that change the character into different creatures, such as Guangzhi, a wolfman with a fire glaive. These spells are available on cooldown and the game includes a skill tree for character upgrades.
The game progresses mostly linearly with larger areas interspersed throughout. The character encounters various yaoguai as enemies and can use shrines along the way as checkpoints.
