The game puts players in the shoes of Henri Clement, a French soldier trapped in an underground bunker. Henri must navigate the bunker while being hunted by a photosensitive monster called "the Beast." The primary objective is to survive by maintaining the base's power supply and collecting resources and ammunition scattered randomly throughout the game's map.

In order to fight against enemies, including the Beast, Henri can utilize a revolver and throwable items such as grenades and flares. However, ammunition is scarce, adding an element of resource management and strategic decision-making to the gameplay.

The bunker is dimly lit, and to keep the lights on, Henri needs to refuel the generators. A watch indicates when the generators will run out of fuel, and if they do, the base becomes completely dark, making Henri more vulnerable to the Beast's attacks. To navigate in the darkness, players can use a dynamo flashlight.

Amnesia: The Bunker introduces a "semi-open world" concept, offering players more freedom to explore and approach objectives. Unlike previous games in the series, the game features fewer scripted moments, with the Beast consistently posing a threat throughout the experience. The game's world is designed to respond to player actions, and players can utilize environmental interactions to their advantage. For example, pouring gasoline on the floor and igniting it can create a temporary light source to frighten the monster.

Additionally, safe rooms are available where players can store items, save the game, and consult the in-game map to better understand the bunker's layout.
